At the core of Fathom's cookieless tracking technology is a combination of hashing and salting techniques. This process pseudo-anonymizes individual visitors' data, ensuring that no personally identifiable information (PII) is collected or stored.
When someone visits your website, Fathom creates a unique, anonymized identifier called a "user signature hash" for their session. This identifier is created using a combination of the visitor's IP address, User Agent, website hostname, and a unique salt based on the site ID. The data is then hashed using the SHA256 algorithm, making it almost impossible to reverse-engineer and identify individual users.
This approach allows Fathom to collect data on user interactions, such as page views, bounce rates, and session durations, without compromising user privacy.
